Choosing the right height for a wooden chandelier above a table or island.
by Thomas LABORIE on 18 Oct 2025
You already own a wooden chandelier ready to illuminate your table or kitchen island. But before hanging it, an essential question arises: at what height should you hang it to truly enhance your space?
Imagine the scene: a soft, slightly golden light gliding over the wood, warming the room without glare. It's this perfect balance—between aesthetics, visual comfort, and a welcoming atmosphere—that we'll help you achieve.

1) Ideal height depending on the type of table
A well-placed chandelier is noticeable for the soft light it casts. Too high, it loses its charm; too low, it obstructs the view. Here are the guidelines that most often work:
Reference points validated both by professional guides and by showroom tests measured by our team with a lux meter, for a harmonious and natural result.
| Table type | Recommended height | Visual advice |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular (4–8 people) | 75–90 cm from the tabletop | Center the chandelier on the axis of the table. |
| Round | 70–80 cm from the tabletop | A single central light fixture is sufficient. |
| Oval | 75–85 cm from the tabletop | Two pendant lights or one elongated model balance the light. |
2) Common mistakes to avoid
| Error | Consequence | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Too low (<70 cm) | Glare | Raise to between 75 and 90 cm |
| Light that is too white (>3500 K) | Cold rendering | Choose 2700–3000 K |
| Model too small | “Lost” effect | Adjust the size to fit the table |
| Misalignment | Visual imbalance | Recenter on the axis |
3) Adjustments according to ceiling height
If the ceiling height is above 2.60 m , lower your pendant light a little further to maintain harmonious proportions.
4) Special case of kitchen islands
An island requires lighting that is both functional and warm: aim for 75–95 cm above the kitchen worktop, with several well-spaced pendant lights. Adjust according to the ceiling height and the shape of the lampshades.
5) Color temperature & ambiance
The color of the light transforms the perception of wood. Stick to warm white to preserve its softness:
| Desired atmosphere | Temperature | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cocooning | 2700 K | Golden halo, soothing |
| Family | 3000 K | Balanced warm white |
| Kitchen | ≤ 3200 K | Mild neutral |
